Forum (émission de la RSR) sur le thème: "Genève refusera le jugement du Tribunal arbitral"
La constitution d'un tribunal arbitral, pour résoudre la crise libyenne, est fortement contestée à Genève. Dans une lettre envoyée lundi au Conseil fédéral, le canton de Genève dit vouloir se "défendre par tous moyens de droits utiles" contre une décision de ce tribunal, qui serait contraire au droit suisse. L'exécutif genevois se base sur un avis de droit de l'Institut du fédéralisme de Fribourg (IFF), qui montre qu'une décision de cette Cour sera difficilement applicable en Suisse. Political Stability in a Divided Society: A Study of three European Consociational Countries
On Wednesday, 9th of June 2010, Mr. Cheng Mai, doctoral student of constitutional law at the Peking University Law School presented his findings on using consociationalism to attain political stability in a multicultural society. Mr. Cheng Mai was a Visiting Researcher at the Institute of Federalism in Fribourg and spent three months researching on comparative political systems in Switzerland, the Netherlands and Belgium. Conference on Parliament Accountability in Malawi
On March 4th – 5th 2010, the Institute of Federalism at the University of Fribourg (Switzerland) (IFF) and the Institute for Policy Interaction in Blantyre (Malawi) (IPI) organised in Liwonde a conference on Parliamentary Accountability and Local Governance in Malawi. It was the culmination of a project financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) on increasing the effectiveness of the Malawian parliament. Reports on Parliamentary Sessions in Malawi between 2005 and 2008 were presented at the conference along with papers by young scholars on parliamentary accountability. Participants included members of parliament of Malawi, civil society organisations, academia and the media. More Information...

A Vietnamese delegation visited our Institute
On September 30th, 2009, the IFF welcomed a delegation of 8 officials from the People's Republic of Vietnam led by H.E. Ambassador Hoang Van Nha. The aim was to collect detailed information on direct democracy for Vietnam is about to introduce some elements of direct democracy at the local level. The IFF is always proud and happy to contribute to the strengthening of democracy throughout the world.

Second workshop on Local Government in Sudan
On 11-12-January 2009 a follow-up workshop co-organized with Dr. Omer Awadalla and supported by Swiss Ambassador Motyl, took place in Khartoum to discuss the Recommendations put forward after an initial workshop in April 2008. Our Institute was represented by its Directors, Prof. Peter Hänni and Prof. Eva Maria Belser, and Ms. Vanessa Rüegger, research fellow. The workshop was a success and promises to be decisive for strengthening local autonomy and local democracy, and encouraging knowledge exchange between the Local Government Ministries.
